Starmer blames Sadiq Khan's ULEZ, but he backed it just two weeks ago!

Labour's shock loss in Uxbridge & South Ruislip has seen Starmer once more looking for someone else to blame for it.
Right so where Starmer and Co should be celebrating their by-election win in Selby and Ainsty, they have instead spent far more time talking about Uxbridge and South Ruislip, playing the blame game as per usual when it comes to Starmer, because nothing is ever his fault, he’s never to blame, they lost Uxbridge narrowly, the bookies had them nailed on to win, what went wrong, oh let’s blame Sadiq Khan then! It’s got to be ULEZ, Londoner’s don’t want the green c*ap we’ll scapegoat him, it’ll take the heat off St Keith, the patron saint of boring. First and foremost, let’s put to bed the notion this is about Green policy. The Greens increased their vote share in the Uxbridge by-election as they did in all three by-elections, so you can quite easily extrapolate from across the country that interest and enthusiasm for Green Party policy is growing, they got it right, they came third in all three by-elections progress all the way there, they had a good campaign. Let’s also put to bed that ULEZ being introduced to begin with was down to Sadiq Khan. It was first moved under Ken Livingstone when he was London mayor in 2003, the London Congestion Charge Scheme. This started small, doubled in size by around 2007, the following year Livingstone brought in the Low Emission Zone or LEZ. Johnson came in and announced new plans for the LEZ where cars and motorbikes would be affected, but wouldn’t come into effect until 2020 with a charging period not beginning until 2023. Of course Johnson went before then and Sadiq Khan came in. He brought the charging period in straight away in 2019, he expanded it a bit in 2021 and then announced he wanted to expand it to the whole of London. Some blame the Tories for forcing this upon Khan or they’d withhold funding, it was a narrative popularly going around for a time, this doesn’t appear to be true, it’s Khan’s idea. The government weren’t refusing funding for London mayor normal goings on, they were refusing funding to push ahead with this expansion, which was all Khan, but Khan has done so anyway. He’s even admitted to shortfalls in funding but is still pushing ahead. So if you want to blame anyone for expanding ULEZ, well you absolutely can blame Sadiq Khan for thatt, but is that the whole story here? Where does Keith come in? Well it’s not after the by-election pointing the blame at Khan for why Labour lost, because just two weeks ago, Starmer was a full throated supporter of ULEZ!Show more
