A Reprieve for Emergency Responders: Solar Storm Forecast 09-28-2017
Although the solar active region responsible for all the X-flares just a few weeks ago has returned to Earth view, it is a shadow of its former self. Emergency responders to Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria as well as to the earthquakes in Mexico recently can sigh in relief as there is no threat of radio blackouts from big flares on the day side of Earth this week. We do have a solar storm though hitting Earth now from some fast wind that should last over the next 24-48 hours. Aurora photographers are currently reporting beautiful aurora down into mid-latitudes and views like this should continue. Amateur radio operators will have some issues with the bands, especially on the night side during the storm and GPS/GNSS operators should exercise caution near the dawn-dusk terminators and anywhere near aurora. See details of the latest activity and what else the Sun has in store this week.
