DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
God said David was “a man after my own heart”. His devotion and attitude toward God greatly touched God’s heart. But later, this great man of God failed miserably and even turned away from God for a season in his life.
Have you ever seen someone who was close to God fall away? Perhaps they were even a Christian leader you looked up to. What was your response? (What did you think! What did you feel? Disappointment? Sadness? Did it discourage you in your walk with God?)

How is it possible that someone who loves God can backslide and end up so far from God? How does that happen?

In Matthew 26:41 Jesus told his disciples: “Pray that you enter not into temptation.”
What does prayer have to do with overcoming temptation?

Note Jesus was asking them to pray BEFORE the temptation came!
We must live proactive Christian lives. Don’t wait for a problem to show up at your door!

In “the Lord’s prayer” Jesus gave us 5 things or areas to pray about. One of those 5 had to do with evil and temptation. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” It must be important for Him to have included that.
Other than temptation, what kinds of evil can possibly come our way?

What kind of things actually happen (behind the scenes) for the one that prays this from the heart?

Jesus asked the disciples to pray so that they wouldn’t fall to temptation, but they fell asleep instead. (Have you ever done that LOL!) He then explained: “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak”.
He was saying: “You want to do right. You want to go forward. You want to be faithful. But the flesh is weak! You aren’t able in your own strength.”
His POINT? You are going to need to be strengthened and empowered by God, to make it through what is coming at you! To keep going forward!
What does this verse show us that connecting with God through prayer will do for us?

Jesus wasn’t just chastising them. He was motivating them. “You are missing out on something you desperately need.”
We all need to be motivated to pray!
We need to know it works…it makes a difference!
What benefit is there to prayer? Why should we pray, after all, there are so many other things to do!

They didn’t pray because they were tired and sleepy.
What are some of our best excuses not to pray?
