Food Giant Retaliating Against Union Workers?

A listener calls in with a story about a food truck driver she knows being laid off after recently unionizing. Over 50 delivery drivers at US Foods in Charlotte, N.C., have voted to join Teamsters Local 71, seeking improved pay, affordable health insurance, an end to favoritism, seniority rights, job security, and respect. The voting process took place by mail over the past few weeks, and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) tabulated the ballots, resulting in an overwhelming 3-1 majority in favor of joining the Teamsters. The drivers cover routes in several states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. They faced challenges during the organizing drive, with the company attempting to discourage unionization, but their unity and determination prevailed. Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien, General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, and Local 71's business agents and organizers played a significant role in supporting the workers' efforts. Now, with Teamster representation, the drivers look forward to negotiating a contract that addresses their concerns and ensures fair treatment.
