Federal Judge Delivers Bigoted Twofer For Religious Conservatives With Absurd Ruling

A Texas federal judge, Reed O'Connor, has ruled that insuring against HIV transmission violates the religious freedom of companies objecting to LGBTQ+ people, leading insurance companies to be exempt from covering such medications. As a consequence, various preventative services mandated by the Affordable Care Act are now in doubt. The case, Braidwood Management, Inc. v. Xavier Becerra et al., involved eight individuals and two businesses from Texas who argued against mandatory coverage of PrEP medications, screenings for sexually transmitted diseases, contraceptives, and counseling for unmarried people, asserting that it promoted practices they objected to on religious grounds. O'Connor had previously ruled that the PrEP requirement infringed on religious freedom. Despite dismissing certain objections, O'Connor upheld the plaintiffs' arguments, stating that insurance companies should not be compelled to cover PrEP medications based on religious freedom principles.
