On May 16th, police responded to a call about two guys on Anderson Avenue in Southeast Albuquerque, one holding a machine gun. A responding detective identified one person as a 16-year-old wanted in the murder of Jada Gonzales.

One of the individuals has been identified as 18-year-old Isaac Reyes.

Albuquerque Police Department video shows the 16-year-old and Reyes running from officers after stopping their car. APD Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock describing what video shows moments after, leading to the shooting.

“He starts to trip and turning around with a gun in his hand, and it's just a really highly volatile situation,” Hartsock said.

Cmdr. Hartsock says the fact teens who were 16 and 18 involved in violent crime is troubling.

“It's always alarming when young people have access to firearms and are committing violent crimes,” Hartsock said, “We're not new to it, though.”

Multiple guns retrieved from the scene which took place. Police say one gun was Reyes'.

They say another found inside the getaway vehicle was shown to be modified illegally.

“We see them more and more,” Hartsock said. “We work with our federal partners on every single one because the federal United States attorney's office is willing to prosecute these persons that are modifying these guns.”

Officers also say the guns found are both connected to previous shootings. Moving forward, the department says they plan to use this as a lesson to learn from.

“We're going to review it for training and policy and the DA's office will review it,” Hartsock said.

Hartsock added regardless of how young these suspects are, it is a dangerous situation.
