The Egyptian city of Luxor has been the capital of Egypt since the 12th century BC. The Luxor Temple complex on the eastern bank of the Nile River in the city was the largest and most important religious centre in ancient Egypt. The temple was built in 1400 BC. The temple, known as "ipet resyt" in Egyptian, meaning "southern refuge", was preserved by Amenhotep III, Ramses II, Tutankhamun and other pharaohs for hundreds of years.
