I'm not a fan of long drawn out prologues that serve as gated tutorials, where you're unable to do anything outside of a beginner zone.
Morrowind had the right idea. 10 to 20 minutes of speaking to NPCs to create your character as you get off the boat, then you're released to go wherever and do whatever you want.
