Like it did with many other people the pandemic changed the way we think. Knowing that grocery store shelves can be empty in a matter of moments made us realize that we needed a better, more secure way to provide for our family. That’s not why we bought acreage (we were already hunting for a bigger place) but when we bought this farm we decided we could use it put food on the table.

We really enjoy growing our meat. It is a lot of work but we enjoy the challenge and find that working with our hands has benefits that are hard to describe. However we can’t grow it all (at least not yet) so in the meantime we hunt for deals from our local butcher shops to stock up on things like chicken. It’s not as good as what we grow ourselves but until we get to the point where it’s all from the GWP Homestead it will do just fine.

To us, self-sufficiency isn’t about growing everything we’ll ever need on our not-quite-10 acres. It’s about providing for our family so when things get a little sideways, be it natural disaster or worldwide panic, we know we’ll be ok. At least for a little while.
