Fifty years ago one of the bloodiest eras in Chinese history began, in which as many as two million people died.
What was it and when did it begin?

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was a decade-long period of political and social chaos caused by Mao Zedong’s bid to use the Chinese masses to reassert his control over the Communist party.

Its bewildering complexity and almost unfathomable brutality was such that to this day historians struggle to make sense of everything that occurred during the period.
However,
Mao’s decision to launch the “revolution” in May 1966
is now widely interpreted as an attempt to destroy his enemies by unleashing the people on the party and urging them to purify its ranks.

When the mass mobilization kicked off party newspapers depicted it as an epochal struggle that would inject new life into the socialist cause.
“Like the red sun rising in the east, the unprecedented Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is illuminating the land with its brilliant rays,”
one editorial read.
In fact, the Cultural Revolution crippled the economy,
ruined millions of lives and thrust China into 10 years of turmoil, bloodshed, hunger and stagnation.
Gangs of students and Red Guards attacked people wearing “bourgeois clothes” on the street, “imperialist” signs were torn down and intellectuals and party officials were murdered or driven to suicide.
After violence had run its bloody course, the country’s rulers conceded it had been a catastrophe that had brought nothing but “grave disorder, damage and retrogression”.
An official party reckoning described it as a catastrophe which had caused
“the most severe setback and the heaviest losses suffered by the party, the country, and the people since the founding of the People’s Republic” in 1949.

History is repeating...
On August 19, 1966 - Chinese students launched a fight for social justice to fight for the rights of the oppressed in China. It was widely believed that the 'patriarchal system' in China had been created by the elites and held down women, minorities, and the working class. The students cried out for a revolution and change, and consequentially launched the infamous Chinese Cultural Revolution.
Students put a red band around their arm to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and called for a change on old ideas that they called the 'Four Olds.' The Four Olds were: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas.
The movement was supported by the Chinese media.
Mass demonstrations and looting by the students ensued.
Statues were torn down.
Chinese architecture was destroyed.
Classical literature and Chinese paintings were torn apart and burned.
Temples were desecrated.
The Cemetery of Confucius was attacked.
The corpse of the 76th-generation Duke Yansheng was removed from its grave and hung from a tree.
Wealthy homes were attacked and destroyed.
Many families' long-kept genealogy books were burned to ashes.
All of history, in short, was to be removed and replaced. This was the central meaning of Cultural Revolution: That China was going to destroy every trace of its bourgeois (privileged) past and replace it with a new culture built on the principles of Maoism and Marxism.
Communist leaders like President Liu Shaoqi were taken out of power and replaced with men Mao believed were not critical of his reign.
Public leaders who were considered to be oppressive were tried by angry mobs and vigilantes.
Three days later, August 22, 1966, a central directive was issued to stop police intervention. The police were disbanded in the city and the students formed a community solution called the RED GUARD. The RED GUARDS policed the communities and punished anyone who did not agree with their ideas. Even people that supported the movement, but had bad thoughts ("wrong thinking") could be punished.
Though many Christians supported the movement in the beginning, they quickly became the number one target of the RED GUARDS and public trials were held to condemn them to death.
Many of those that were on board with the cause of the rebellion, in the beginning, saw that it was not really what they had signed up for, but by then it was too late. The power that the Red Guard wanted had already been given.
More people died during the cultural revolution in China than any war, famine, or natural disaster in the history of man. An estimated 20 to 30 million people were killed.

The Great Chinese Famine 1959-61

The deadliest famine in history took place in China between 1959 and 1961.

This catastrophe has often been referred to as one of the greatest man-made disasters, though regional droughts did play a part.
The famine was caused by a combination of political and social factors brought about by the People’s Republic of China.

These policies, namely the Great Leap Forward which began in 1958, and the people’s communes,
created a deadly environment that cost tens of millions of lives. These policies included drastic changes to farming policy and prohibited farm ownership. Additionally,
peasants were redirected from agriculture in favor of iron and steel production, reducing farm outputs drastically.
All of this lead to a significant reduction in China’s grain production, and a widespread food shortage.
While governments reported some 15 million deaths, experts agree that the death toll was significantly higher,
with numbers ranging anywhere from 20 to 50 million deaths.

Chinese Famine Of 1907 In 1907

Northern China experienced a famine which claimed up to 25 million lives.
This famine came about due to extreme rains which hit during growing season and washed away vast numbers of plants and prevented food production.
Nearly 40,000 square miles of land was flooded during this time, in the Honan, Kiang-su and Anhui provinces. Roughly 10% of Northern China’s population was lost in this catastrophe.

Chalisa And South India Famines 1782-84

The Chalisa famine took place in Northern India from 1783 to 1784
and followed a similar famine which had occurred the previous year in South India. Unusually warm conditions swept through India in 1780 and persisted for the next few years, causing a severe draught.
With the excess heat and lack of rain, crops and food supplies died out or were unable to grow, quickly causing a food shortage.
Over the course of both famines, more than 11 million lives were lost, and populations were drastically depleted, especially in the Delhi territories.

Bengali Famine Of 1770

In 1770 Bengal was hit with a devastating famine that wiped out roughly a third of its population.
The famine was brought on by extreme draught and crop shortages. The area was governed by the East India Trading Company at the time, and their focus on profit greatly exacerbated the problem.
Despite knowledge of the worsen farming conditions, taxes were increased and crops shifted away from rice to the more profitable opium and indigo.

This meant that not only were farmers struggling to produce food, but what was available was priced outside of their reach.
As a result of this poor management, roughly 10 million people starved to death.
Soviet Famine (Holodomor) 1932-33
In 1932, the Soviet Union, then ruled by Joseph Stalin, saw a man made famine that killed millions in Ukraine, Kazakhstan,
Northern Caucasus and Volga Regions.
All under Soviet rule at the time, these regions saw drastic declines in their populations between 1932 and 1933.
The famine struck hardest in the grain producing areas as leaders looked to industrialization instead of agriculture.
Crop farming was also prohibited, and food supplies confiscated, causing mass starvation.
The details of this famine have been widely disputed and because of this, death tolls are debated. In 2003,
the United Nations declared that between 7 and 10 million people died due to starvation or complications thereof, but researchers have since adjusted this estimate to between 3.5 and 7.5 million.

Russian Famine 1921

World War I and the year leading up to it hit Russia hard.
Political unrest and civil wars through 1917
lead to a bloody revolution and the start of Soviet rule.
Food supplies were confiscated or redirected to Bolshevik soldiers, leaving civilians to do without.
This in turn saw a decrease in food production as some chose not to cultivate crops they would not be allowed to eat.

While policies were being put into place to ease tensions between peasants and authorities,
the Volga basin experienced terrible crop failure. As a result, some 5 million Russians lost their lives.

Bengal Famine 1943

The second world war hit Bengal hard, with a number of increasingly devastating factors leading to a widespread famine.
The Bengal province was then under British rule, and it was their lack of action that made things much worse.
The Bengal economy had relied heavily on agriculture at the time, but productivity staled as the population increased, causing both a shortage of work and food. Inflation followed swiftly,
and left many unable to pay for sufficient food supplies.
The government denied any existence of a famine, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill offered little aid.
Eventually humanitarian aid and a fruitful harvest helped to lift the famine, but by then 2 - 3 million lives were lost.

North Korean Famine 1994-98

One of the most devastating famines of modern times, the North Korean famine or March of Suffering, lasted between 1994 and 1998.
This famine occurred due to a combination of natural causes and dictatorship rule.
1995 saw large flooding, destroying over a million tons of grain.
North Korea’s policy of ‘military first’ also meant that resources, manpower and food supply were directed to the military over civilians,
meaning, in many cases,
that civilians who could not forage or fend for themselves simply starved to death. Foreign aid did help to reduce the death toll, and nearly 3.5 metric tons of food donations were received.
Despite this, it is estimated that some 3 million lives were lost, though the numbers were said to be significantly underreported by North Korean officials.

Persian Famine 1917-19

World War I brought a period of famine and sickness throughout much of Persia, then ruled by the Qajar dynasty.
One of the leading factors in this famine was the successive years of severe droughts which greatly reduced farming outputs. Additionally,
what food was produced was confiscated by occupying forces.

Changes to trade as well as general unrest during the war heightened fears and created hoarding situations which further exacerbated the situation.

This, in conjunction with poor harvests and war profiteering combined to form a famine which spread quickly throughout the area.
Death toll numbers are widely debated, but most scholars estimate around 2 million lost their lives due to famine or resulting diseases.
Irish Potato Famine 1845-1853

Another one of the worst famines is the Irish Potato Famine which occurred between 1845 and 1853.
It was caused by a crop disease which killed off much of Ireland’s potatoes. This was the largest food source at the time, especially for the poorer citizens, and the lack of potatoes meant a drastic lack of food.
With crops limited, Ireland needed help in order for their people to get enough food to survive. However,
British national ships prevented aid from other nations, thus causing further death and starvation.
An estimated 1 million people died coming at a high cost to the Irish population. Nearly 25% of the country’s citizens were wiped out, with some 1 to 2 million others fleeing to North America.

The Irish famine was genocide.

The people were crammed in like sardines on an 8 - 12 week journey at that time depending on weather conditions.
If someone got sick they were thrown into the Atlantic instead of receiving treatment in case they infected the rest of the 'cargo' as the Irish people were known by their perpetrators.
They netted the lakes and rivers of Fish, burned the crops in the fields and poisoned the land. There was no co-incidental 'Blight'.
If you were caught trying to fish in lakes and rivers or off the coast you were shot dead.
There were patrols all along them. People were getting hung for offences like "Stealing a Turnip" to try to feed their starving to death Children.

There were ships laden with food leaving Irish ports for the mainland UK and N. Europe daily.
They stole peoples farms. Just blatantly threw them out of their own houses and claimed their farms and land.
People could only watch at gunpoint as the food was carted toward the ships as they starved to death. If you resisted you and your family were executed. They mutilated people, chopped off heads and limbs, hung, drew and quartered
(being drawn is being stretched by your hands and feet in opposite directions until you are torn apart), drown people, burned them alive.
They raped the women and children. Real sick stuff.

We know all of this because the Irish Story telling tradition is so strong and should be an important part of every culture.
Pass down the truth and wisdom to your Children always.

China's digital surveillance system involves massive amounts of data being gathered by the state. In the so-called "brain" of Shanghai, for example, authorities have an eye on everything.
On huge screens, they can switch to any of the approximately one million cameras, to find out who’s falling asleep behind the wheel, or littering, or not following Coronavirus regulations.
"We want people to feel good here, to feel that the city is very safe," says Sheng Dandan, who helped design the "brain."
Surveys suggest that most Chinese citizens are inclined to see benefits as opposed to risks: if algorithms can identify every citizen by their face, speech and even the way they walk,
those breaking the law or behaving badly will have no chance. It’s incredibly convenient:
a smartphone can be used to accomplish just about any task, and playing by the rules leads to online discounts thanks to a social rating system.

That's what makes Big Data so attractive, and not just in China.

Higher prices and shortages are likely for fruit and vegetables and other produce from the glasshouses of Europe,
where the heat has been turned down because of the steep inflation in natural gas prices.

In particular, the supply of these crops is likely to fall from the Netherlands,
where an estimated 2.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year (about 8% of the country’s consumption of the fuel)

As European gas prices increased 985% year-on-year, to a record high level in December, Dutch glasshouse owners turned down the heat needed to grow crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and flowers.

Meanwhile, many British glasshouse growers didn’t go ahead with their normal January crop plantings, because of high gas prices, and the lack of workers.

At the other side of Europe, there are reports that about 70% of all Bulgarian greenhouses for vegetable production didn’t produce crops this winter due to high gas prices,
leading to a lack of home-produced tomatoes and cucumbers on their domestic market.

Greenhouse owners in some other EU countries have depended on state aid to continue production.

The seismic move toward omitting some gas appliances comes as the California Energy Commission retools state building codes for energy-efficient homes.
It's an expansion of the state's first-in-the-nation mandates requiring solar panels on all new homes starting last year.

The agency now plans to tighten rules on natural gas for home heating and hot water, a code update that would take effect in 2023.

Environmental groups want a complete ban on natural gas in new homes,
but the state commission has signaled that isn't likely right now. Officials instead in the coming months are likely to use incentives to urge developers to pick electric options for heating, like heat pumps. More muscular requirements could come later.

The long-term outlook for natural gas isn't good in California, which wants to eliminate most carbon emissions by 2045.
