Crescent Solar Storm Wanes While Fast Wind Builds | Space Weather News | 06.01.2022

Our Sun calms down quite a bit this week as the last of the M-flare players rotates off the Earth-facing disk. We have only three numbered regions in view and they have been relatively well behaved. As such, not only are we getting a reprieve from radio blackouts on Earth's dayside, but solar flux has dropped to the lowest levels we have seen in months. We are still holding on to the triple digits for solar flux but just barely. This means radio propagation might cool down a little bit compared to a few weeks ago, but overall things should remain in the good range. GPS users should also enjoy this reprieve, as lower solar flux and quiet conditions improves GPS reception, especially at lower latitudes. Aurora photographers, however, will need to wait for conditions to improve. We do have a small coronal hole that will send us a pocket of fast solar wind as we move into the weekend and that could give us some decent aurora views at high latitudes, but likely only sporadic shows at mid-latitudes. Learn the details of the coming fast wind, say goodbye to our only M-flare player, and see what else our Sun has in store.
