The Sun Puts on a Happy Face for Halloween | Solar Storm Forecast 10.28.2022

This week our Sun puts on a happy face as a set of coronal holes give us a whimsical image of a Jack-o-Lantern, just in time for Halloween. These coronal holes will be sending us some fast solar wind and could give us some decent aurora over the holiday weekend. Aurora photographers could see aurora dip down into mid-latitudes multiple times over the next several days. Outside this impending storm, amateur radio operators and GPS users should enjoy reasonably quiet conditions on Earth's dayside with low risk for radio blackouts early this week. But things may begin to change around mid-week due to some activity on the Sun's farside that will be rotating into view of Earth over the next few days. Noise on the radio bands will likely increase as we move into early November on Earth's dayside. On Earth's nightside, GPS users should remain vigilant anywhere near aurora and near dawn and dusk once the solar storm hits. Learn the details of the coming fast solar wind, when and where to see aurora, and find out what else our Sun has in store!
