A Prominence Dances with Fast Wind Around the Bend | Space Weather News 10.19.2022

This week our Sun continues to snooze and solar activity quiets down. We do have a small coronal hole beginning to rotate through the Earth strike zone now, which will give us a short blast of fast solar wind. Aurora photographers at high latitudes could be in for a brief show around Thursday and Friday, but it likely wont last long. However, a larger coronal hole will give us another, longer chance for aurora beginning next week. Amateur radio operators and GPS users should rejoice this week as the risk for radio blackouts drops way down, which means both radio propagation and GPS reception on the dayside are likely better than they have been in a long while. These conditions should continue throughout this week and possibly into next, with the brief exceptions around October 20th and 24-25th when fast solar wind could cause some disruptions on Earth's nightside. Lean details of the coming fast solar wind, when and where aurora may be visible, and what else our Sun has in store.
