When US Highway 72 was widened to accommodate heavier traffic coming through Stevenson, Alabama in route to Huntsville to the south; this caused a complete transformation of the town. The historic downtown portion, which was the heartbeat of Stevenson for many years, began to shut down as more and more businesses moved closer to the busier highway. Today most of downtown Stevenson is an unoccupied ghost town with only a few existing businesses remaining. One good thing to come out of this is Steele Park which allows a nice place for friends and family to gather.
