Grant & Gain God’s Grace

I. Review/Background
II. Narrative
1. An unusual request (15:11)
2. Reckless living (15:13)
3. True poverty & humiliation (15:15-16)
4. Soliloquy (15:17-19)
5. His first thought was not moral, but practical (15:17)
6. The return and confession (15:20-21)
7. Father’s response (15:20-24)
8. The older son responds (15:25-30)
III. How should we then live?
1. Beware of jealousy.
Exodus 20:17
1 Corinthians 3:1-3
Galatians 5:26
a. Three types of jealousy:
(1.) Grace given to others (15:20)
(2.) Perceived unfair rewards (15:22-23)
(3.) Attention or notoriety (15:25-26)
b. See the reality behind the jealousy (15:13)
c. Celebrate the found (15:32)
2. His grace is enough.

Lies we believe:
a. You are a Christian and should have known better.
b. You’ve committed such egregious sin that you can’t come back.
c. You shouldn’t go back even if you can. Since God is sovereign, He allowed you to fall into sin. He doesn’t care.
d. If I go back, the Lord will not receive me. Or if He does, He will have to plug his nose in disgust.
