In an effort to combat theft, San Francisco Safeway stores have taken measures to enhance security by installing security gates at their self-checkout kiosks.

Customers using the self-service lines at various Safeway stores in the Bay Area are now required to scan their receipts on an automated plastic gate before exiting the store.

The decision to implement these security measures comes as a response to the high levels of theft experienced not only at Safeway stores but also at other retailers across San Francisco, the Daily Mail has reported.

The city has been facing a challenging situation with a combination of factors, including high inflation, a surge in crime rates, and reduced foot traffic, contributing to what has been termed a ‘retail apocalypse.’
