BARBIE Movie Set To Blow Up The Box Office, BUT...

The BARBIE Movie (2023) from Mattel and Warner Bros starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is set to release with what is expected to be a perhaps a $100M domestic box office opening projection (if not potentially higher).

The production budget for Barbie is reported to be $100M as per The-Numbers.com but other sources suggest $145M. I'm sure we will have some clarity in coming days. It's also been reported the marketing budget for the film is in the vicinity of $100M itself, which seems about right for a film of this caliber considering the popularity of the intellectual property involved.

But will the huge box office opening hold up over time as some early viewers have expressed disgust at the messaging in the film and changes to characters.

One of the things that made Super Mario Bros such a massive hit was that it stayed tru to the characters and avoided and modern day messaging for audiences. Barbie may not be made in the same vein. If it isn't, it could struggle to maintain a strong box office hold into the second and third weekends.
