The Herero and Nama genocide was a horrific crime against humanity that occurred in German South West Africa (now Namibia) between 1904 and 1908. It is estimated that between 24,000 and 100,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama people were killed. The genocide was a campaign of extermination led by General Lothar von Trotha, who ordered the Herero people to be exterminated. The genocide ended in 1908, but its effects are still felt today
