The Meaning of Christ's Ascension

What is the significance, meaning, and message of Jesus’ Ascension to Heaven?

It signaled the end of His earthy ministry.
It signified the success of His earthly ministry.
It marked the return to His glory.
It symbolized the exaltation by His Father Phil 2v9

"You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God might dwell there." Psalm 68v18

Which was quoted later in Ephesians 4:8 to refer to Christ who ascended on high, giving gifts to the church. And Psalm 110v1 which was quoted later in Acts 2v34-35.

Jesus spoke of going to His Father (John 7v33; 14v12, 28; 16v5, 10, 28)

Jesus’ ascension was physical.

"And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel." Acts 1v10

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR JESUS?

1. The ascension of Christ marked the end of His humiliation and His entrance into the state of exaltation.

"But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God." Hebrews 10v12

The Humiliation of Jesus:
- Incarnation
- Suffering
- Death
- Burial
- Descent into hell

The Exaltation of Jesus:
- Resurrection
- Ascension
- Sitting at the right hand of God
- Return in glory and power

2. The ascension of Christ indicated new work in heaven as our high priest.

"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession." Hebrews 4v14

Jesus will forever be a member of the human race. He will remain forever the incarnate Son of God.

Jesus became humanity’s new High Priest.

"Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them." Hebrews 7v25

3. The ascension of Christ brought an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

“Because the Lord Jesus died on the cross, I have received forgiveness of sins; because the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, I have received new life; because the Lord Jesus has been exalted to the right hand of the Father, I have received the outpoured Spirit.” Watchman Nee

4. The ascension of Jesus means that He will come back the same way He left.

"Who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Acts 1v11

5. The ascension of Christ gives believers access to God.Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4v16

6. The ascension of Christ guaranteed an enlarged ministry for the believers.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father." John 14v12

7. The ascension of Christ foreshadows our future ascension into heaven.
"Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4v17

8. The ascension of Christ made room for us to be seated with Him.

And raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2v6

Jesus is our identity! Jesus is the identity of every Christian. (1 John 4v17)
