1 Thessalonians 06 Sexual Purity and Love 4.1-12

SBC Family and Friends,

We get to some practical instruction tonight. The word loipos in 4:1 indicates this shift. Until now Paul has mainly been describing his ministry among the Thessalonians, his desire to see them, and Timothy's good report.

This book is unique in that Paul has the application before the doctrine. The doctrine will start in 4:13 and go through 5:11, but the application is in 4:1-12. I don't think there is another book that is so blatantly written this way in Paul's corpus, though his later letters to Timothy and Titus are virtually all application. Those letters were written to doctrinally mature believers, so what it indicates to me is that application is for the mature. You have to start by getting sound doctrine, then you move from that to application, which is applying what you know. The order in 1 Thessalonians is different than Paul's norm, but the application is repeating what he had already taught them, so it's not new.

Download the attachment. I'll see you tonight!

Thanks for your patience. I missed you last Sunday. I am doing better.

Grace to you,
Jeremy
