Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One continues the franchise’s excellent track record of pure entertainment. The obvious critique here is that this movie is just half of the Dead Reckoning story, but at least we knew that going into it.

It’s easily the most complex plot in the franchise, but simultaneously it is the most confusing, with lots of fast-paced info-dumps about the main bad guy (an AI construct called “The Entity”) and a cruciform key McGuffin frequently changing hands between members of varying intelligence agencies, bad guys and brokers. However, the filmmakers realized that a computer program can’t throw punches at Tom Cruise, so they give us Gabriel, some guy from Ethan Hunt’s past that has just now come back and is somehow in cahoots with The Entity.

On that note, the film raises more questions than it answers, but that’s to be expected of a part one. As of now it’s done its job of setting up what will hopefully be Ethan’s most impossible mission yet: taking down a sentient AI that can almost perfectly predict the future and will always be a million steps ahead.
