Protestors in Kenya have thrown rocks at police and schools have been shut in two major cities as opposition to rising living costs continues.

The country’s opposition party called for people to take to the streets during three days of protest against tax hikes which were introduced last month by the government of President William Ruto.

It follows last week’s protests, during which at least 14 people died – including 10 who were shot dead by police. Human rights organisations also criticised police after tear gas was fired into a classroom, hospitalising more than 50 children.

This week, tear gas has been fired in the capital, Nairobi, and the coastal city of Mombasa at protesters, while many businesses have remained shut over fears of looting.
