· Today, a US Army soldier defected to North Korea. This was the first time it happened since the 1960s.
· I don't think this actually influenced any messages. They're an army private who's been detained for 2 months and was about to be shipped back to US. Back in the 60s, US soldiers in similar situations defected to NK. North Korea's unlikely to be able to use this event for much leverage, either in negotiations with the US (low rank individual) or domestically (as with the defects from the 1960s, North Korea's unlikely to find much military intelligence from a low-ranking soldier, and a soldier with assault charges is probably not someone they'll be in any rush to integrate into their society).
