How fast do you need to be for Rugby? Sprint Tests!
Speed is one of the most important qualities for Rugby players.
Field-based sports are hugely dictated by who can get into a specific position quicker.
If you are fast, you won't be caught and you will do more catching; you will seem more agile.
If you are slow, you will be caught and you won't do catching...you will seem sluggish.
Any player can get faster. For Rugby, we are looking at distances under 40m being the most important.
Further distances are important, but less frequently hit. Also improving your speed on shorter distances will carry over well to longer distances.
As always, these are not set-in-stone and there will always be outliers depending on your age, play style and exact position...these are based on my coaching experience in combination with research data collected on amateur and professional Rugby players.
