A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem video reveals a comics-accurate origin story for the Turtles. Based on the comic book characters, the upcoming animated reboot spearheaded by Seth Rogen explores the early days of the Ninja Turtles' crime-fighting in New York City. The voice cast includes newcomers Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the titular team alongside big stars like Hannibal Buress, Rose Byrne, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Ayo Edebiri, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Paul Rudd, and Maya Rudolph in supporting roles.
Today, ahead of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem release date on August 2, Paramount released a new video revealing an origin story for the titular team in the reboot.
In 30 seconds, the video reveals how a rat and four baby turtles were mutated by radioactive ooze in the sewers, giving birth to a family of "Turtle Tots" and their adoptive father, Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan), who teaches them the art of ninjutsu once they are teenagers.

How Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem's Origin Story Compares To The Comics
The origin story presented in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem video reflects the original Mirage comics created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984. The story sees four baby turtles exposed to a canister of mysterious glowing green ooze from a nearby research laboratory that is dropped in the sewers, causing them to mutate into turtle-human hybrids. In the comics, Splinter was the pet rat of a martial artist named Hamato Yoshi who he learns from and after being exposed to the mutagen, turns into a giant rat and teaches the Turtles the art of ninjutsu.
This origin story provided the foundation for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that would eventually expand into various TV shows, movies, and other media. However, since the origin story presented by the Mirage comics was gritty and somewhat unconventional, subsequent adaptations made several changes in order to be more lighthearted. However, it appears Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem isn't shying away from this origin story at all, which is good news for anyone who cares about comics accuracy.
