"A national non-profit organization aimed at preventing gun violence is launching a local chapter here in the north metro.

Sandy Hook Promise is led by several family members who lost loved ones in the December 2012 school shooting in Newton, Connecticut. Although the local chapter is for communities within the Anoka-Hennepin School District, the group is not affiliated or a program of District 11 but rather a chapter lead by concerned educators and parents.

"It's really about what are some action plans you can take as a parent, what are some action plans you can do as a kid if you have a friend, what are some action steps for you as somebody who is maybe having these thoughts, because this also deals with issues of suicide prevention as well," says Jefferson Fietek, Chapter Founder.

The first meeting for the Sandy Hook Promise - Minnesota A-H District 11 Region is coming up on Wednesday, November 29 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Crooked Lake Library. The group plans to meet the last Wednesday of each month."
