Nelson Mandela was a South African leader who fought against a system called apartheid, which treated people unfairly based on their race.
He became the first black president of South Africa in 1994, after the country held its first fair election where everyone could vote.
Mandela worked hard to bring people together and heal the divisions caused by apartheid.
He believed in equality and wanted to make sure that everyone, no matter their background, had the same rights and opportunities.
Mandela was also a member of the African National Congress party and led it from 1991 to 1997.
He wanted to create a better future for all South Africans and worked towards that goal throughout his life.
