"Sound of Freedom" Filmmakers Take on Hollywood — and Win! (ft. Tim Ballard)

In this exclusive interview, Tim Ballard — the real-life hero depicted by Jim Caviezel in “Sound of Freedom” — reveals how Hollywood remains a fierce nemesis of his efforts to combat human trafficking.

“I don’t trust Hollywood,” Ballard said. “I’m in business [fighting human trafficking] largely because of the crap Hollywood produces.”

Ballard knew from the get-go he wanted Jim Caviezel to play him because of Caviezel’s talent, his Christian faith, and the fact that he was not afraid to go against Hollywood values.

“Who can I trust?” Ballard asked. “Someone who is in, but not of Hollywood; someone who loves Jesus no matter what and that’s Jim Caviezel. Not only is he a fabulous actor, but he loves Jesus. And if I didn’t love Jesus, I wouldn’t be able to do anything that I’m doing, so I need an actor who can say without Jesus he couldn’t do what he is doing — and that’s why Jim killed it.”

Despite a general lack of mainstream press of the film, a multi-year long attempt by Hollywood to prevent the film from reaching the big screen, and multiple theaters suffering uncharacteristic and widespread “technical difficulties” that stymie its showings, “Sound of Freedom” still brought in $11 million on its opening day: the Fourth of July. And its success didn’t stop there: its currently bringing in more money than Harrison Ford’s latest Indiana Jones flick.

Judging by this box office success, “Sound of Freedom” — analogous to David in the biblical epic David and Goliath, stood up to Hollywood and won.
