Emiliano Zapata (1879 - 1919) played a significant role in various political movements opposing Mexican President Porfirio Díaz and the wealthy landowners. When the Mexican Revolution erupted in 1910, Zapata emerged as a prominent leader of the peasant uprising in Morelos. Joining forces with other peasant leaders, he established the Liberation Army of the South, quickly assuming the role of its undisputed leader. Under Zapata's command, the army contributed to the downfall of Díaz's regime. However, when revolutionary leader Francisco I. Madero assumed the presidency, he disowned the Zapatistas, labeling them as mere bandits.
