The Rapture is Coming Like a Thief - Are we Building Too Much Doctrine on an Analogy?

Several times in scripture those that believe in a Pre-Tribulaton Rapture use Scriptures where Christ gives the analogy of a thief in the night. What does this analogy mean and are some making too much of this analogy?
