A prominent Oakland dentist, killed on a busy street in the middle of the day. The incident occurred at a time when the Bay Area's AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) communities were on high alert due to widespread anti-Asian hate that was prevalent not only in Oakland, but throughout the United States.

At first glance, it looked like an attempted robbery, a random hate crime, or possibly both. But when detectives started sifting through evidence they were gathering, it looked like the killing was not so random after all.
