Dorothy Arnold left her home in the morning, telling her mother she was going shopping for a new evening gown. She chose to go alone and walked south on 5th Avenue. She bought chocolates at a candy store and a book at Brentano's bookstore, where she had a brief conversation with a friend. Arnold mentioned that she was going for a walk in Central Park but failed to meet her mother for lunch at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

Arnold never returned and was not heard from again.
