The pulley system on the RAD Sportz Kayak Hoist is excellently machined, ensuring smooth and easy lifting of my kayak.
I was able to minimize the clearance from the ceiling to the boat by hanging the kayak upside down and splaying the paired hooks apart as far as possible before hooking into the strap loops, saving valuable space in my garage.
If I had clearance issues, such as above a garage door, I could choose to forego the recommended board and instead secure a long screw right into the center of the joists above, providing a secure installation.
To prevent the hooks from sliding away from each other and potentially causing the kayak to fall, I tied the two drop pulleys together with an appropriate sized cord.
However, if you have a high ceiling like mine, which is 10 feet, it is advisable not to cut the cord as instructed. You will need all of the cord to be able to lower the kayak to the floor easily.
The provided screws to secure the wall cleat, unfortunately, were of low quality. They had little torque and the heads came off. I had to use different screws that were stronger.
I highly recommend that the manufacturer revises the instructions regarding cutting the rope and provides stronger round-headed screws for the cleat.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the price of the RAD Sportz Kayak Hoist is fantastic and it offers the strength and reliability that are important when lifting and storing a kayak.
Overall, this kayak hoist is a great value and easy to install. I was able to make it work in my garage with 9.5ft ceilings above a garage door, although higher ceilings would make it even easier to use.
