• Neh. 10:1-27 The covenant was sealed - both in their own names, and in the name of all the rest. It may seem strange that Ezra did not appear among them. But that might be because he was prevented, by some sickness, or other extraordinary impediment. It is true, we meet with Ezra after this, at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, Neh 12:36, and therefore he was then freed from this impediment, whatsoever it was. Four classes here seal. Nehemiah first, as their governor. And after him, secondly, The priests, Neh_10:2-8. Thirdly, The Levites, Neh_10:9-13. Fourthly, The chiefs of the people. All power that be are ordained of God and must be taken as such.

• Neh. 10:28 The wall was completed, and the covenant God had made with his people in the days of Moses was restored (Deuteronomy 8). This promise has principles that are important for us today. Our relationship with God must go far beyond church attendance and regular devotions. It should affect our relationships (Neh_10:30), our time (Neh_10:31), and our material resources (Neh_10:32-39). When you chose to follow God, you promised to serve him in this way. The Israelites had fallen away from their original commitment. We must keep our promise to God in times of adversity or prosperity.

• Neh. 10:29 Their nobles - The common agreed with the nobles in this good work, great men never look so great, until they serve as encouragement and examples to the common. This happens when they show interest in the most valuable issues of their inferiors, who would cleave to them closer than they can imagine. Observe their nobles are called their brethren; for in the things of God, rich and poor, high and low meet together. They cleave - They ratified what the others had done in their names, declaring their assent to it. Humility is great virtue before God.
