The Art of Loving God: A Deep Sufi Poem by Hafiz on True Devotion
Discover the profound spiritual teachings hidden within Hafiz's poetry.
Hafiz was one of the greatest Persian poets of all time, and had a natural way with words that not only sounded beautiful to the ear but also revealed deep spiritual and mystical insights.
In this video, we explore one of his most profound poems on true devotion, "The Art of Loving God," which beautifully conveys themes of love, spiritual connection, and the yearning for union with the Beloved.
Hafiz's words teach us how to transcend the limitations of our mind and connect with the divine reality that underlies all things. By cultivating an authentic yearning for God and living in alignment with our true self, we too can experience a deep and intimate connection with the divine.

I long to open up my heart
For my heart do my part.
My story was yesterday’s news
From rivals cannot keep apart.
On this holy night stay with me
Till the morning, do not depart.
On a night so dark as this,
My course, how can I chart?
O breath of life, help me tonight
That in the morn I make a start.
In my love for you, I will
My self and ego thwart.
Like Hafiz, being love smart;
I long to master that art.

Hafiz, also known as Shams-ud-din Muhammad, was a 14th-century Persian poet, mystic, and philosopher who is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets in the Persian language. His works have been translated into numerous languages and are admired for their depth of thought, emotional intensity, and spiritual insight.
Hafiz was born in Shiraz, in present-day Iran, in around 1325 CE. He lived during a period of great cultural and intellectual flourishing in Persia, known as the Timurid Renaissance, and was a contemporary of other notable Persian poets such as Rumi and Saadi.
Hafiz's poetry is characterized by its use of the ghazal form, a type of lyrical poem that typically consists of rhyming couplets and a refrain. His poems often explore themes of love, spirituality, and the divine, and are known for their use of imagery, metaphor, and wordplay.
Hafiz's spiritual beliefs were deeply rooted in Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam that emphasizes the direct experience of the divine. His poems often express a sense of longing for union with the divine, and explore the themes of love and devotion in both human and spiritual relationships.
Hafiz's legacy has been significant, both in Persia and beyond. His poetry has been highly influential in Persian literature and has inspired countless poets and artists throughout the centuries. His works have also been widely translated into other languages, including English, and continue to be read and admired by people all over the world.
In addition to his literary legacy, Hafiz has also been revered as a spiritual master by many Sufis and other seekers of the divine. His teachings on love and devotion, as expressed in his poetry, continue to inspire and guide people in their spiritual journeys to this day.
