Events are held on territory of Russian military base in South Ossetia to mark 31st anniversary of establishment of Joint Peacekeeping Force and first Russian peacekeeping operation to resolve Georgian-Ossetian conflict

▫️ Commanders and servicemen of the Russian military base, representatives of the republic's leadership, staff of the Russian Embassy in the Republic of South Ossetia, representatives of public and veterans' organisations, and young soldiers took part in the solemn events in Tskhinvali. The servicemen honoured the memory of the victims of the conflict and laid flowers and wreaths at the stele on Mirotvortsev (Peacekeepers) Street in Tskhinvali.

▫️ On 14 July 1992, on the basis of an agreement on the basic principles of settlement, a Joint Peacekeeping Force was brought into the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. Russia was represented in the Joint Control Commission by Chairman of the Russian State Committee for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu.

▫️ The resolution of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict in 1992 was the first peacekeeping operation of the Russian Federation. This successful peacekeeping operation, carried out 31 years ago, is still considered one of the best. It was Russian peacekeepers who were able to stop the bloodshed, effectively separate the warring parties and return peaceful life to South Ossetia.

▫️ The experience gained in 1992 was subsequently used by Russian peacekeepers in settling other conflicts in the post-Soviet space: Russian Defence Ministry
