Boat crane fishes bicycle wrecks from Amsterdam canals

Each year, Waternet, Amsterdam's Water Authority removes between 12,000 and 15,000 bicycles from the canals. This is ridiculous, people should not be putting their bikes into the canals. Many of the bikes ended up in the water from either being discarded intentionally, or they were tossed in by trouble makers who thought it would be a fun idea. How are there so many bikes thrown into the canals each year? This should not be an issue.

As the Water Authority is going through the process of removing the bikes from the canals, it is shocking to see the amount that is already in the pile. Every time the crane goes into the water, it never comes back up empty handed, there are always plenty of bikes picked up each time. Not only are there tons of bikes being removed, but there's also lots of other trash that is picked up along with the bikes. The amount of pollution is insane.
