We Just Upgraded Our Canon T7i Camera for YouTube! (Kinda)
One thing that is very important about being on YouTube is the need for a quality camera and mic system, especially if you are going to be creating highly detailed tutorials and how-tos. Since January 2019 I have been using a Canon T7i DSLR camera, but prior to that I was using my Cell Phone. I recently had to go back to using a phone because I fell and broke my camera.
Several weeks ago, I was carrying 3 backpacks into my basement and studio. I didn't notice that my youngest daughter had left some of her toys, specifically a princess show, at the bottom of the stairs on the landing. When I took the final step, I rolled my right ankle severely, to the point where it audibly popped when I rolled it. I went down like a sack of potatoes, landing on my backpacks.
In tremendous pain, but I managed to get ice on my ankle and elevate it to start trying to expedite the healing process. The fall happened on a Tuesday, but I didn't know there were any issues with my gear until the following Sunday. My laptops in both backpacks worked just fine so I didn't think anything of it. When I went to start filming on Sunday, my camera would not turn on, no matter what I tried. I tried different batteries, different lenses, and different power supplies, I even tried my battery, lens, and SD Card on another camera and they all worked.
I reached out to Canon and they got me set up with their service center. There were 3 possible repair charges, $110, $220, and $335. They quoted me $220 and had me send the camera in just before the 4th of July. About 10 days later I got the camera back, and I was shocked and what I broke.
It turns out that I broke the main PCB circuit board inside the body of the camera! I knew I fell hard, but not that hard! I will say that Canon was amazing to work with, had great communication, and kept me informed throughout the entire process. Now I can take my T7i with me as I head to more conventions, such as the Southeast Game Exchange this weekend. So, We Just Upgraded Our Camera for YouTube back to what we have been using for the last 4 years.
