Marvel and DC Comics WANT Their Fans to FIGHT!

In the past decade, DC Comics and Marvel have largely ignored their Ultimates and Elseworld imprints respectively. Instead of creating diverse new characters and storylines for those imprints, they are choosing to do that in their main line instead. What could possibly be their reason for doing this?
