The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the national bird of the United States since 1782, chosen for its majestic beauty, great strength, and long life.

It is the only eagle solely native to North America, and its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico.

Bald eagles have two known subspecies and form a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), which occupies the same niche as the bald eagle in the Palearctic.

In the late 20th century, the species was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States, but populations have since recovered, and the species's status was upgraded from "endangered" to "threatened" in 1995, and removed from the list altogether in 2007 in the wild, a bald eagle will live 30-35 years (up to 50 years in captivity)
