Beluga Whale Point along the "Turnagain Arm" of the highway from Anchorage to Portage Glacier.
There are eight species of whales that frequent the cold and icy waters of Alaska. The Beluga, Humpback, Gray, Orca, Bowhead, Blue, Right, and Minke whales. My favorite sighting in all my years of Alaska has been to see a huge Blue Whale surfacing just outside of Land's End at the end of the Homer Spit as a friend was treating me to lunch. I actually first saw what I thought was a "moving dark island" and realized it was a Whale, then I saw a huge spout from the Blue Whale. When the blue whale surfaces from the deep it blows the water out if its lungs before breathing in fresh air. The spout can be as high as 11 meters (35 feet) high and is visible as far as 5-8 km (3-5 miles) away. When I saw it was a Blue Whale, I actually yelled, "Blue Whale!" Everyone, even the cooks came out to see. It was a beautiful sight. Yesterday's drive was a rarity as my friends have been complaining about so much rain this Spring. Well, summer is here, and Ray is in town. July 13th, 2023
