The KJ Show #50 – Rare Earth Elements: Green Energy’s Dirty Dozen (and a half)

Transitioning to a decarbonized economy requires ramping up production to build more EVs, solar panels, and wind turbines. But these green energy technologies are manufactured using one or more of 17 Rare Earth Elements (REEs).
These minerals are "rare" because the extraction process is difficult and expensive. But the environmental cost is even higher, as REE mining operations cause long-term environmental damage, including water and air pollution, and radioactive waste.
Dr. Katherine Johnson will explore the harmful side effects of using REEs for a not-so-clean and green energy transition on today's show. Please join the conversation at 11 a.m. Eastern Live by calling 866-451-1451 or send in your thoughts to kjohnson@johnsonconsults.com
