82nd Airborne Conduct Large-Scale Air Assault Training Exercise | Dec 2017 | ThrowBack Thursday

Dressed in civilian clothes and armed with rifles, soldiers playing the part of enemy forces at Fort Bragg’s Holland Drop Zone knew what was coming.

The large-scale air assault, conducted by the 82nd Airborne Division was named Operation Panther Blade and took place late Wednesday during a training exercise involving assault forces from two battalions, a live-fire artillery mission and 48 helicopters.

Under the cover of a dark, cloudy sky, the first of the attacking soldiers were announced by the rumble of howitzers in the distance and the thumping sound of UH-60 Black Hawk, CH-47 Chinook and AH-64 Apache helicopters.

The opposing forces, vastly outnumbered, were quickly overwhelmed as soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division swept across the training area.

With over 800 paratroopers and 50 rotary-winged aircraft, the 82nd demonstrated their ability to win tomorrow's fight.
