Saudi investors plan to spend more than a billion dollars on a controversial new golf venture with the US PGA tour, according to officials.

Ron Price, Chief Operating Officer of the PGA, testified about the proposed merger before Congress on Tuesday.

Despite significant funding from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Mr Price said the new entity will be controlled by the PGA.

Critics have accused Saudi Arabia of using sports to burnish its image.
