'Eleventh Night’ celebrated with huge bonfire in north Belfast
The Twelfth of July celebrations kicked off in north Belfast with Northern Irish loyalists igniting spectacular bonfires. Usually, the festivities start on 'Eleventh Night', also known as 'Bonfire night', and usher in the 'Twelfth', an Ulster Protestant celebration on July 12. The tradition of lighting bonfires dates back to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, when the Protestant King William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James II. At that time, bonfires were lit to welcome and light the way for the victorious King William.
