The Hitch-Hiker (1953). Creative Commons Public Domain Mark 1.0 License.

Personal Note

There are two versions of The Hitch-Hiker (1953) in the public domain, but with different licenses. This is the 2014 restored version. The post 2014 version is uploaded here on Rumble under a separate heading and file in the interest of maintaining the integrity of thorough research before a film is uploaded to GenreOnline channel on Rumble and transparency with reference links for verification. You can tell this is the restored 2014 version by the add date in the Internet Archive documentation detailed below. The 2014 restoration was made from the original 35mm negative hence for reasons I cannot fully explain other than that appears to be why there are two similar, but never the less different licenses. Thank you.

The Hitch-Hiker was the first American mainstream film noir directed by a woman. It was selected in 1998 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." The film is in the public domain.

In January 2014, a restored 35mm print was premiered by the Film Noir Foundation at Noir City 12 at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. On April 6, 2014 The Hitch-Hiker was shown again at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Mary Ann Anderson author of The Making of The Hitch-Hiker appeared at this event.

The failure of the original copyright holder to renew the film's copyright resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.
