Stephen Norrington, who had gained a reputation for being difficult, reportedly vowed never to direct a film again and hasn’t.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is very loosely based on the comic book of the same name by Alan Moore (he distanced himself from the film) and Kevin O'Neill and sees various characters from Victorian fiction re-tooled into super-heroes. It draws on the works of Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Bram Stoker, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H. Rider Haggard, Ian Fleming, Herman Melville, Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Allan Poe, Gaston Leroux, and Mark Twain

The planned sequel would have been an adaptation of the second series of the comic book, with the League battling the Martian Tripods from H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds". A clue to the sequel's plot can be gleaned from a poster in the background, which says "Volcanic eruptions on Mars"
