Have you ever wondered what are Northern lights? When charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they cause electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon: light. This process creates the beautiful aurora or Northern lights. Vilhjalmur Olafsson captured these jaw-dropping sights featuring the northern lights in Iceland. Have you ever witnessed the breathtaking colors of the aurora borealis in person before?

You can't see them very often because they are visible from late September to early April anywhere from 6 pm to 6 am. There also needs to be solar flares on the sun or solar wind. Fascinating! If you haven’t seen any northern light yet, here is an amazing video captured in Iceland that will simply take your breath away!

In another incredible footage, the northern lights make a shimmering appearance over Bayview Beach, Wisconsin, on March 27. Shot in a video timelapse that spans three hours, the lights look majestic. This other timelapse was filmed on the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Facebook page. The northern lights, or Aurora Borealis, were visible in various parts of the Midwest, according to weather reports.

Check out the strongest Northern Lights show in a decade! The Northern Lights have an index for activity strength, from a 0-9 KP index. It is very rare that it reaches 9, but in March of 2015 it did just that. Here is a real time video of what it looked like, and at the end you will also see a beautiful shooting star with the aurora in the background.
