Aussie Singer Speaks Out Against Lockdowns

Australian singer-songwriter Filippina Arena, more commonly known as Tina Arena (her parents are Sicilian immigrants) has recently spoken out against Victoria’s record-breaking COVID lockdowns in a recent interview with The Weekend Australian. She said the rules were totalitarian and she actively broke them. “What we try and advocate in the music industry is that your job is to be a f***ing rebel, actually, your job is to challenge societal perspectives. It doesn’t mean you have to be right, but we all stood up and listened when Johnny Rotten wrote God Save the Queen. We took notice of David Bowie, one of the most ­extraordinary philosophical minds that ever graced our industry.”

As you probably already know, I’m on Tina’s side. The only way to prevent tyranny is to stand up against it. But as you could probably guess, the usual suspects came out on Twitter and so on and attacked her.

You know what I find funny. People went along with these stupid five-kilometre rules, but is there any evidence whatsoever that it saved a single life from an airborne pathogen? I doubt it. Perhaps the real cookers are people who blindly believe in bogus science. And I’m not using that term lightly.

Then Chief Health Officer of Victoria Brett Sutton explained his decision on the five-kilometre rule (as always, all these links are in the description below). He stated: “Five kilometres is a judgement about where people could reasonably go for exercise, where people could reasonably go for the permitted reasons without increasing too significantly the number of other people and households they come into contact with. It’s just trying to make a judgement about limiting interactions to an extent possible, but allowing people some opportunity to find a park, find a walking trail for the purpose of exercise.”

So basically, it was just a ‘judgement’. It was seemingly not based on any scientific evidence whatsoever. Actually, epidemiologists at the time didn’t even agree on the rule. It may have even had the opposite effect with the rule resulting in the significant concentration of people exercising in the same place at peak times making it very difficult to effectively socially distance.

Since then, it’s come out that these rules were barely based on science at all. It turns out that Premier Daniel Andrews ordered secret surveys to be carried out to gauge public support for things like vaccine passports and five-kilometre travel rules. They were designated by Daniel Andrews’ department as ‘‘cabinet in confidence’’ and blocked from public release. It was only due to Freedom of Information laws that we were even able to know of their existence. As I said, this wasn’t science, well at least, not medical science (perhaps political science?). This was a popularity contest. If the surveys showed that the people would obey, then the Andrews’ Government implemented the rule.

So what do you think? Was Tina Arena right it in standing up against these stupid rules? I think the answer is obvious.
