I recently purchased an Abu Garcia bait reel for the first time in about 20 years. I specialize in saltwater fishing. Today, it was delivered and I immediately checked the contents of the box.
All the accessories were included (phew!). It came with a spare handle and spool, and it was just barely under 10,000 yen. I thought it was a great deal.
I played around with it and everything seemed normal! I will be spooling it with PITBULL 5G 0.8 line. Overall, this bait reel is of high quality and offers excellent cost performance.
I will be using it with rods such as the Valley Hill CPHC. While I wont be able to try it out in real fishing until next year, I am looking forward to it.
I use both spinning and bait reels from Shimano and Daiwa, but bringing Abu back into the mix will expand my fishing enjoyment. This bait reel is recommended for beginners, intermediate, and advanced users alike.
As someone who only uses Abu for bait reels, I am impressed by the coloring, smoothness of winding, lightness of the body, and the sense of superiority it gives me.
If I had to say one thing, it would be that I wish it came with a spool with deeper grooves. I purchased it for octopus and pelagic fish, but I feel a little unsure about the line capacity with PE 2 for pelagic fish.
However, it can easily haul in octopuses weighing around 2kg, so I highly recommend it for that. Easy to use even for beginners. Yet to try, but the reel feels buttery smooth and solid!
Will give a second review once I use it. Its extremely easy to use, the design is great, and even with its lightweight, I was able to effortlessly reel in a 50-class bigeye grouper!
Absolutely amazing. I purchased it mainly for finesse fishing. Its not specifically designed for casting, but if you handle it well from casting to reeling, you can cast under 3g without any issue using PE 0.8 and fluorocarbon 1.2.
(It may also depend on the overall balance of the rod, so you might be able to cast even lighter weights.)
In addition, it looks great, and the body color constantly shines with shades of green, blue, and purple, which is captivating for anyone, especially boys.
However, the drag sound is unique to the plastic clicker, making a cheaper sound. Its more like a "click-click-click" or even a "scrape-scrape-scrape" rather than a "kink-kink-kink" sound.
Since it has an engine brake and mechanical brake but lacks magnet brakes (perhaps its part of the manufacturers design? ), I cannot recommend it to bait reel beginners.
However, I think it is a product that can satisfy those who are familiar with bait reels, with its small size, performance exceeding its price, and plenty of supplies available.
